1. Getting Started
The size of the striped pattern that we are making is 32 by 32 pixels so make a new document (File > New…) with a width of 32 pixels and a height of 32 pixels. Fill the background layer with black (this is just so we can see where we are putting the stripes - we will hide this layer later).
2. Making the Stripes
Create a new layer (Layer > New > Layer…) named “pattern”. Now zoom in to about 1600% and get out the Pencil Tool. Fill in the document so it looks like below.

3. Defining it as a Pattern
We are now going to be defining our pattern as a pattern in photoshop (so we can use it as a pattern properly ). But firstly hide the “background” layer by making it not visible through the layers window (click the eye).
Now go Edit > Define Pattern… give your pattern a name like “stripes”. Add some background to it and lower the opacity of the pattern layer and you have yourself a little striped box of some sort
Now whenever you want to fill a selection with a pattern you can choose that one. Same with in the blending options mode under pattern overlay etc.
