I picked up this little trick on the net somewhere and thought I would share it, since there are many times when a person wants to create a nice fire effect, explosion or what have you.
Step 1: Make a document with a black background
Step 2: create a 2nd layer and Using small clouds type brushes create the shape of the flame. The edges whould be wispy and the center more solid.
step 3: Click
Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Color Balance
and set values to:
Shadows: 0 0 0
Midtones: +100; -39; -97
Highlights: +93; +1; -35
Step 4: You should now have a base that looks like fire. Now use your burn and dodge tools to touch up the bright or dark areas in order to make the effect even more realistic.
That's all there is too it, I made these images quickly, but if you take time creating your cloud shape, you can produce some really nice looking effect
I have learned quite a bit from your tuts, all of them are first rate imo. Well explained and easy to follow. I will try and post up a few more tuts when I get a chance.
